The facility is a run-of-river power plant on the Rhine River, located about four kilometres below Eglisau. For over 100 years, the plant has been using the gradient of the Rhine between the Thur and Glatt estuaries and produces power for over 70,000 households. The plant went into operation in 1920 and was extensively renovated in 2012.
You can experience the Eglisau hydroelectric plant on a guided tour. Tours are offered for groups from 6 to 46 persons and take place on selected dates in the mornings or afternoons.
Hydropower is the backbone of Swiss power supply. Sixty per cent of Swiss electricity comes from hydropower. The tour around the Eglisau hydroelectric plant offers you a look into the past and present of hydropower. The machine hall still looks almost exactly the same as it did when the plant was commissioned in the year 1920. However, now state-of-the art machines, which were installed in the course of the 2012 renovation, are in operation inside the historic buildings.
Tours at the Eglisau power plant are free. However, a booking fee of 5 francs (credit card) will be charged per group or single booking.
Good physical fitness (steep stairs) is required. For safety reasons, people with pacemakers or implanted defibrillators cannot be allowed access to the power station.
Sturdy, closed, non-slip shoes are required. In addition, we recommend clothing adapted to weather conditions. Some of the tour takes place outdoors.
